42nd VOLL-DAMM BARCELONA INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL

42nd VOLL-DAMM BARCELONA INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL

FEATURING SONNY ROLLINS'
80TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

The 42nd Voll-Damm Barcelona International Jazz Festival is set to commence Wednesday, November 3rd through Thursday, December 2nd. This month long celebration will feature Sonny Rollins' 80th Birthday Celebration along with performances by Chick Corea solo piano, Chucho Valdés & The Afro-Cuban Messengers, David Sanborn Trio, Kenny Garrett Quartet, Charles Lloyd Quartet, Kurt Rosenwinkel Standards Trioand Gonzalo Rubalcaba Quintet.

Opening the festival on November 3rd, Sonny Rollins continues his 80th Birthday Celebration after a historic New York performance that included special guests, Jim Hall, Roy Hargrove, Christian McBride, Roy Haynes, and Ornette Coleman. New York Times critic Nate Chinen stated, "The concert found him in high spirits, in strong form and, for a generous stretch, in rare distinguished company. It was an evening worthy of an American master, and primarily because he made it so."

Some of the best and brightest world music and jazz artists will be performing at this year's festival, including Jamie Cullum, Omar Sosa, Jaques Morelenbaum, Concha Buika, Richard Galliano, Peter Brötzmann Chicago Tentet, Paolo Angeli, Steve Wilson-Bruce Barth Duo, Lee Konitz-Dan Tepfer Duo, and JD Allen Trio.

The festival's lecture series continues this year with guest speakers: Wall Street Journal / Jazziz columnist Larry Blumenfeld, who will talk about jazz in New Orleans five years after Hurricane Katrina, and author Ted Gioia, who will discuss the future of jazz.

The festival will present three highly anticipated programs at the world renowned Monvínic, which the Wall Street Journal proclaimed as "the best wine bar in the world." DownBeat magazine will present, for the first time, aBlindfold/Winefold Test featuring journalist Dan Ouellette and pianistChucho Valdés. The event showcases critical listening and wine tasting, an extension of DownBeat's famous "Blindfold Test." In a separate event, the "Kurt Rosenwinkel Monvínic Experience," the American guitarist will improvise to the taste of classic Spanish wines presented by the vignerons themselves and the highly-regarded sommelier Josep Roca, co-owner of the famous three-star restaurant El Celler de Can Roca. Blue Note Records President Bruce Lundvall will also present the "Story of Blue Note" along with pairing wines in a discussion with Joan A. Cararach, artistic director of the festival since 2003.

Last year, the Voll-Damm Barcelona International Jazz Festival, in partnership with New York's Jazz Standard, officially closed the annual festivities with an engagement by pianist Chano Domínguez & The Flamenco Quintet. The performances were recorded live and will be released in 2011.

In May 2010, the festival joined forces with the CareFusion Newport Jazz Festival® to enhace world-wide recognition for these two time honored events. "It is exciting for Barcelona to be associated with the most famous jazz festival in the world and to collaborate with George Wein, who is a good friend and an inspiration to me," said artistic director Joan A. Cararach. "Additionally, I look forward to the opportunity of exploring wider exposure for the many artists based in Barcelona, such as pianists Chano Domínguez and Omar Sosa, among others."

Spain saw its first professional jazz festival in 1966. It started with a concert at the amazing Palau de la Música in Barcelona, featuring pianist Dave Brubeck with his classical quartet. Despite surviving the hostile times of the Franco dictatorship, the festival ceased operations between the years of 1977 and 1979, which were surprisingly the first years of democracy. Since the late '80s, the festival has been organized by The Project, whose efforts reach upwards of 300,000 people annually. The Project was founded in 1988 by producer Tito Ramoneda, still president of this organization leader in Barcelona and Spain. In 2010, the festival celebrates its 42nd anniversary with musicians and industry professionals from around the world making Barcelona Jazz Festival one of the largest and most ambitious jazz festivals in Europe.

TWO GREAT CITIES, TWO GREAT FESTIVALS UNITE TO CELEBRATE RICH HISTORY OF JAZZ

TWO GREAT CITIES, TWO GREAT FESTIVALS UNITE
TO CELEBRATE RICH HISTORY OF JAZZ

SISTER FESTIVALS:

CareFusion Newport Jazz Festival® (August 6 - 8), Newport, RI
Voll-Damm Barcelona International Jazz Festival (November 3 - December 4), Barcelona, Spain

Jazz Impresario George Wein Performed at

May 17 Reception in Barcelona to Announce Collaboration

Celebrate the rich history of jazz when two great cities and two great festivals - CareFusion Newport Jazz Festival® in Newport, RI and Voll-Damm Barcelona International Jazz Festival in Barcelona, Spain - join forces to increase world-wide recognition of the long-running events. The renowned jazz impresario George Wein teamed up with international music promoter Tito Ramoneda and artistic director Joan A. Cararach to announce the partnership of the sister festivals at a reception on May 17, 2010 at Barcelona's Gran Hotel Havana. The celebration was highlighted with a performance by the George Wein Barcelona Trio featuring Horacio Fumero on contrabass, Jordi Rossy on drums and Wein on piano.

Founded by Wein in 1954, the Newport Jazz Festival® (now the CareFusion Newport Jazz Festival®) started the festival era and continues the tradition August 6 - 8, 2010 with three days of music at Newport's International Tennis Hall of Fame and historic Fort Adams State Park. Among the performers at this year's event are Herbie Hancock, Ahmad Jamal, Wynton Marsalis, Chick Corea, Jamie Cullum, Maria Schneider Orchestra, Chris Bottiand many more.

The 42nd annual Voll-Damm Barcelona International Jazz Festival is set to open with a free outdoor concert on October 3, followed by the city-wide celebration that will run November 3 - December 4. Founded in 1966 and produced by The Project, this long-standing festival attracts music fans and tourists to Barcelona, presenting performances at various locations throughout the city. The full festival schedule will be announced this summer.

"It is exciting for Barcelona to have a relationship with the most famous jazz festival in the world and to collaborate with George Wein, who is a good friend and an inspiration to me," said Mr. Cararach. "Additionally, I look forward to the opportunity of exploring wider exposure for the many artists based in Barcelona, such as pianists Chano Domínguez and Omar Sosa, among others."

Our amazing experiences at New York's Jazz Standard in 2009, first in May with the Catalan Days organized by the Ramon Llull Institute, and later in December using the Standard as a regular venue of our festival with our commission to Chano Domínguez, The Flamenco Side of 'Kind of Blue', had been also a great incentive to this idea."

Mr. Wein (pictured at right with his trio and Cararach; L-R: Horacio Fumero (bass), George Wein (piano), Joan A. Cararach, and Jordi Rossy (drums)) added, "Jazz is a great art form wherever it is performed, but to enjoy the music surrounded by the beauty of Barcelona and Newport makes the music even more memorable. I am thrilled to not only perform here, but also to share this special relationship with Tito, Joan and their festival."

The collaboration of the sister festivals will feature joint promotions including ticket giveaways and discounts, stage announcements, travel packages and more. In addition, there will be promotional activities as part of the CareFusion Jazz Festival New York, also produced by Wein. This festival runs from June 17 - 26 at venues throughout New York City.

GUITARIST-COMPOSER FABRIZIO SOTTI TO PERFORM AT BLUE NOTE ON MONDAY, JUNE 7, IN SUPPORT OF HIS E1 RELEASE, "INNER DANCE"

FABRIZIO SOTTI TRIO TO PERFORM AT
BLUE NOTE ON MONDAY, JUNE 7,
IN SUPPORT OF E1 RELEASE,
INNER DANCE

"With an abundance of infectious grooves and catchy hooks, 'Inner Dance' proves to be a listener-friendly affair with Sotti staking claim as a guitarist with whom to be reckoned."
-
John Barron, AllAboutJazz.com

E1 Music presents a performance date for Italian guitarist-composer Fabrizio Sotti at Blue Note New York on Monday, June 7. Sotti will be joined by organist Sam Barsh and drummerMino Cinelu as they showcase music from his latest recording, Inner Dance (release date: April 6), with sets at 8pm and 10:30pm.

Driven by the dynamic interplay between Fabrizio Sotti's colorful electric and acoustic guitar and Sam Barsh's bluesy Hammond B-3 organ, the Italian born artist/composer's highly anticipated E1 Music debut Inner Dance beautifully recalls the spirit of the mid-60s albums by his guitar hero Wes Montgomery and organ great Jimmy Smith. As inspired as the recording sounds, it may surprise longtime Sotti fans--and jazz guitar enthusiasts new to his multi-faceted vibe--that he originally conceived his first solo album since 2004's Through My Eyesas a more traditional trio project.

"Inner Dance developed into a very exciting project featuring my guitar and the organ that sounded like those classic organ trio albums I grew up with. The organ has a fuller sound and can create bass and harmony at the same time, so I think the tracks are more accessible to listeners, whether they are big jazz fans or not."

After his first major release in the US--the 1999 recording This World Upside Down, that featured John Patitucci, Randy and Michael Brecker, Al Foster and Victor Jones--Sotti's career forged into a fascinating dichotomy between working with some of today's top jazz musicians and writing and producing for superstar hip-hop and pop artists. On the jazz side, he continued his solo recording career with Standards and More and performed on and produced two albums for Grammy winning vocalist Cassandra Wilson, Glamoured (2003) and Closer To You: The Pop Side (2009). He has toured extensively in the U.S. and Europe and worked over the years with an impressive group of A-listers: Al Foster, Roy Hargrove, George Coleman, George Garzone, Steve La Spina, Sammy Figueroa, Mick Goodrick, Mark Egan, Mino Cinelu, Victor Jones, Rachel Z, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Cameron Brown, Andy LaVerne, Harvie Swartz, Brian Lynch, Mick Goodrick, Lincoln Goines, Rick Margitza, Clarence Penn and many more.

Expanding his musical palette into the lucrative and creatively fulfilling realm of hip-hop and R&B, Sotti has played with written and produced tracks for everyone from Dead Prez, Q-Tip, Tupac (a posthumous piece called "If I Fail"), Ghostface Killah, Jennifer Lopez, Whitney Houston, Killah Priest, Styles P, Hell Razah, Foxy Brown, Half Pint and The DEY. In 2006, he produced the album Confidential for an artist named M1 and released it on his own label Sotti Records to great commercial success.

The word "freedom" comes up often when Sotti is discussing his unique and eclectic career and the joyful feeling he has about returning to the jazz world-with a 2009 European tour and the recording of Inner Dance-after a several year layoff. "The thing I love about my life now is really being free to dive into so many different projects and feel like I'm part of them in an authentic way," he says. I bring great passion and knowledge to my hip-hop work, but it's cool the way my jazz roots always come out. For someone like me who is a composer, guitarist and producer, it's nice to have the freedom to explore and live different lifestyles. The legend who set the trend in mixing styles like this is Miles Davis, who loved playing with pop artists in addition to the greatest jazz musicians in the world. He was way ahead of his time. In my own small way, I am simply trying to continue what he started. My roots are jazz but it's always nice to be open minded and embrace new opportunities as they arise."

Lauren Kinhan to Perform at Joe's Pub on Thursday, May 27

SINGER-SONGWRITER LAUREN KINHAN
TO PERFORM AT JOE'S PUB ON THURSDAY, MAY 27TH

AVALON CD RELEASE PARTY

DL Media is proud to announce that singer-songwriter Lauren Kinhan will perform at Joe's Pub on Thursday, May 27th to celebrate the release of her newest album, Avalon. The 12 track release will be available through E1 Music on Tuesday, May 18th.

Lauren Kinhan has been - and is - many things in her life: vocalist, songwriter, producer, musician, mother and wife. For most of her career, she's been best known as a member of the highly acclaimed jazz vocal group, The New York Voices. As if to solidify her reputation as a group singer, in the past few years she's also been performing regularly with two additional vocal ensembles, the more experimental Moss and the more traditional JaLaLa.

But it's high time that Ms. Kinhan got around to making a "solo" album - one where the focus is on her own singing and writing and interpretation. Now in 2010, E1 Music is releasingAvalon, which spotlights Lauren Kinhan as both a singer and composer.

Kinhan grew up in Portland, Oregon, but spent most of her adult career based in New York. "I moved to the city in 1989, mainly to pursue my music on a larger scale." She says, "A few years later, I was introduced to Peter Eldridge. We met at my East Village apartment and spent a glorious afternoon writing and talking about music. At the end of the day, he said 'I don't know if you're interested, but we're holding auditions for the 2nd soprano in the New York Voices.' The rest is history. I auditioned and 18 years later, we're still together."

She notes that for the first decade or so, "The Voices took practically all of our time and energy." But she gladly adds that, "lately there's more time for all of us to do other projects." Ms. Kinhan hesitates to describe Avalon as a "solo" album since so many collaborators were involved, yet that might be the most accurate way to characterize the eleven original songs that comprise the album, which run the gamut of styles and genres from jazz to standards to country, folk, Latin, Brazilian, and contemporary pop, and cover a wide range of subjects from romantic love to parenthood to spirituality.

She adds, in conclusion, that the album has been such a highly personal project to her for so long - the process of composing and recording the 12 tracks took years from beginning to end - "I am so curious about what the reactions will be. You know, it never gets old, that excitement of sharing your music with people. It's an opportunity that I really appreciate."

Romanian Pianist Marian Petrescu to Perform at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola on June 7 with Swedish Guitarist Andreas Öberg

Resonance Logo

MARIAN PETRESCU QUARTET WITH ANDREAS ÖBERG
SET TO PERFORM AT
DIZZY'S CLUB COCA-COLA ON MONDAY, JUNE 7

Resonance Records announces a performance date for Romanian pianist Marian Petrescu and his quartet featuring fellow label mate, Swedish guitarist Andreas Öberg, at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola on Monday, June 7. The dynamic duo performs in support of their respective new Resonance Records releases, Thrivin': Live at the Jazz Standard and Six String Evolution (both available on May 11).

The show is part of the "Monday Nights with WBGO" series presented by Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola. WBGO's Music Director, Gary Walker, will host the evening.

Thrivin': Live at the Jazz Standard, which was recorded in June of 2009, features a buoyant blend of standards culled from the Jazz and Great American songbooks and showcases Petrescu performing in the tradition and spirit of legendary pianist Oscar Peterson.

"When I was eight years-old, I heard Oscar Peterson on TV," Petrescu says. "I was so impressed, and at once I knew: This is what I want. This is what I will try to do. And I had to try very hard, because Oscar had that unbelievable musical level. It was not only his incredible technique, but the way he thought and handled this beautiful instrument."

It's obvious from Petrescu's impassioned playing on his 2009 Grammy-winning Resonance Records debut, Resonance Big Band Pays Tribute to Oscar Peterson and his latest release, that the late jazz piano giant made an indelible impression on him. Peterson's spirited swing is very much an integral part of Petrescu's playing.

Öberg (pictured at left) lends his breat
htaking technical facilities and consistently inventive melodic/harmonic sensibilities on Thrivin': Live at the Jazz Standard. The musical partnership between Öberg and Petrescu embrace and run parallel to the classic Joe Pass-Oscar Peterson collaborations. Öberg's characteristics are also apparent on his new release Six String Evolution, which features John Pattitucci, Dave Kikoski, Lewis Nash.

Throughout his career, Petrescu has played with artists such as Arturo Sandoval, Toots Thielemans, Al Jarreau, Didier Lockwood, Jon Larsen, Tony Williams, and Ray Charles.

Aside from Öberg's projects as a leader, he has performed with diverse artists as: Les Paul, Toots Thielemans, Jimmy Rosenberg, Bucky Pizzarelli, Joey DeFrancesco, Terell Stafford, John Pizzarelli, DJ QBERT, Harvey Mason, Andre Ceccarelli, Billy Kilson and Hank Jones, among others.
