TWO GREAT CITIES, TWO GREAT FESTIVALS UNITE TO CELEBRATE RICH HISTORY OF JAZZ

TWO GREAT CITIES, TWO GREAT FESTIVALS UNITE
TO CELEBRATE RICH HISTORY OF JAZZ

SISTER FESTIVALS:

CareFusion Newport Jazz Festival® (August 6 - 8), Newport, RI
Voll-Damm Barcelona International Jazz Festival (November 3 - December 4), Barcelona, Spain

Jazz Impresario George Wein Performed at

May 17 Reception in Barcelona to Announce Collaboration

Celebrate the rich history of jazz when two great cities and two great festivals - CareFusion Newport Jazz Festival® in Newport, RI and Voll-Damm Barcelona International Jazz Festival in Barcelona, Spain - join forces to increase world-wide recognition of the long-running events. The renowned jazz impresario George Wein teamed up with international music promoter Tito Ramoneda and artistic director Joan A. Cararach to announce the partnership of the sister festivals at a reception on May 17, 2010 at Barcelona's Gran Hotel Havana. The celebration was highlighted with a performance by the George Wein Barcelona Trio featuring Horacio Fumero on contrabass, Jordi Rossy on drums and Wein on piano.

Founded by Wein in 1954, the Newport Jazz Festival® (now the CareFusion Newport Jazz Festival®) started the festival era and continues the tradition August 6 - 8, 2010 with three days of music at Newport's International Tennis Hall of Fame and historic Fort Adams State Park. Among the performers at this year's event are Herbie Hancock, Ahmad Jamal, Wynton Marsalis, Chick Corea, Jamie Cullum, Maria Schneider Orchestra, Chris Bottiand many more.

The 42nd annual Voll-Damm Barcelona International Jazz Festival is set to open with a free outdoor concert on October 3, followed by the city-wide celebration that will run November 3 - December 4. Founded in 1966 and produced by The Project, this long-standing festival attracts music fans and tourists to Barcelona, presenting performances at various locations throughout the city. The full festival schedule will be announced this summer.

"It is exciting for Barcelona to have a relationship with the most famous jazz festival in the world and to collaborate with George Wein, who is a good friend and an inspiration to me," said Mr. Cararach. "Additionally, I look forward to the opportunity of exploring wider exposure for the many artists based in Barcelona, such as pianists Chano Domínguez and Omar Sosa, among others."

Our amazing experiences at New York's Jazz Standard in 2009, first in May with the Catalan Days organized by the Ramon Llull Institute, and later in December using the Standard as a regular venue of our festival with our commission to Chano Domínguez, The Flamenco Side of 'Kind of Blue', had been also a great incentive to this idea."

Mr. Wein (pictured at right with his trio and Cararach; L-R: Horacio Fumero (bass), George Wein (piano), Joan A. Cararach, and Jordi Rossy (drums)) added, "Jazz is a great art form wherever it is performed, but to enjoy the music surrounded by the beauty of Barcelona and Newport makes the music even more memorable. I am thrilled to not only perform here, but also to share this special relationship with Tito, Joan and their festival."

The collaboration of the sister festivals will feature joint promotions including ticket giveaways and discounts, stage announcements, travel packages and more. In addition, there will be promotional activities as part of the CareFusion Jazz Festival New York, also produced by Wein. This festival runs from June 17 - 26 at venues throughout New York City.

GUITARIST-COMPOSER FABRIZIO SOTTI TO PERFORM AT BLUE NOTE ON MONDAY, JUNE 7, IN SUPPORT OF HIS E1 RELEASE, "INNER DANCE"

FABRIZIO SOTTI TRIO TO PERFORM AT
BLUE NOTE ON MONDAY, JUNE 7,
IN SUPPORT OF E1 RELEASE,
INNER DANCE

"With an abundance of infectious grooves and catchy hooks, 'Inner Dance' proves to be a listener-friendly affair with Sotti staking claim as a guitarist with whom to be reckoned."
-
John Barron, AllAboutJazz.com

E1 Music presents a performance date for Italian guitarist-composer Fabrizio Sotti at Blue Note New York on Monday, June 7. Sotti will be joined by organist Sam Barsh and drummerMino Cinelu as they showcase music from his latest recording, Inner Dance (release date: April 6), with sets at 8pm and 10:30pm.

Driven by the dynamic interplay between Fabrizio Sotti's colorful electric and acoustic guitar and Sam Barsh's bluesy Hammond B-3 organ, the Italian born artist/composer's highly anticipated E1 Music debut Inner Dance beautifully recalls the spirit of the mid-60s albums by his guitar hero Wes Montgomery and organ great Jimmy Smith. As inspired as the recording sounds, it may surprise longtime Sotti fans--and jazz guitar enthusiasts new to his multi-faceted vibe--that he originally conceived his first solo album since 2004's Through My Eyesas a more traditional trio project.

"Inner Dance developed into a very exciting project featuring my guitar and the organ that sounded like those classic organ trio albums I grew up with. The organ has a fuller sound and can create bass and harmony at the same time, so I think the tracks are more accessible to listeners, whether they are big jazz fans or not."

After his first major release in the US--the 1999 recording This World Upside Down, that featured John Patitucci, Randy and Michael Brecker, Al Foster and Victor Jones--Sotti's career forged into a fascinating dichotomy between working with some of today's top jazz musicians and writing and producing for superstar hip-hop and pop artists. On the jazz side, he continued his solo recording career with Standards and More and performed on and produced two albums for Grammy winning vocalist Cassandra Wilson, Glamoured (2003) and Closer To You: The Pop Side (2009). He has toured extensively in the U.S. and Europe and worked over the years with an impressive group of A-listers: Al Foster, Roy Hargrove, George Coleman, George Garzone, Steve La Spina, Sammy Figueroa, Mick Goodrick, Mark Egan, Mino Cinelu, Victor Jones, Rachel Z, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Cameron Brown, Andy LaVerne, Harvie Swartz, Brian Lynch, Mick Goodrick, Lincoln Goines, Rick Margitza, Clarence Penn and many more.

Expanding his musical palette into the lucrative and creatively fulfilling realm of hip-hop and R&B, Sotti has played with written and produced tracks for everyone from Dead Prez, Q-Tip, Tupac (a posthumous piece called "If I Fail"), Ghostface Killah, Jennifer Lopez, Whitney Houston, Killah Priest, Styles P, Hell Razah, Foxy Brown, Half Pint and The DEY. In 2006, he produced the album Confidential for an artist named M1 and released it on his own label Sotti Records to great commercial success.

The word "freedom" comes up often when Sotti is discussing his unique and eclectic career and the joyful feeling he has about returning to the jazz world-with a 2009 European tour and the recording of Inner Dance-after a several year layoff. "The thing I love about my life now is really being free to dive into so many different projects and feel like I'm part of them in an authentic way," he says. I bring great passion and knowledge to my hip-hop work, but it's cool the way my jazz roots always come out. For someone like me who is a composer, guitarist and producer, it's nice to have the freedom to explore and live different lifestyles. The legend who set the trend in mixing styles like this is Miles Davis, who loved playing with pop artists in addition to the greatest jazz musicians in the world. He was way ahead of his time. In my own small way, I am simply trying to continue what he started. My roots are jazz but it's always nice to be open minded and embrace new opportunities as they arise."

Lauren Kinhan to Perform at Joe's Pub on Thursday, May 27

SINGER-SONGWRITER LAUREN KINHAN
TO PERFORM AT JOE'S PUB ON THURSDAY, MAY 27TH

AVALON CD RELEASE PARTY

DL Media is proud to announce that singer-songwriter Lauren Kinhan will perform at Joe's Pub on Thursday, May 27th to celebrate the release of her newest album, Avalon. The 12 track release will be available through E1 Music on Tuesday, May 18th.

Lauren Kinhan has been - and is - many things in her life: vocalist, songwriter, producer, musician, mother and wife. For most of her career, she's been best known as a member of the highly acclaimed jazz vocal group, The New York Voices. As if to solidify her reputation as a group singer, in the past few years she's also been performing regularly with two additional vocal ensembles, the more experimental Moss and the more traditional JaLaLa.

But it's high time that Ms. Kinhan got around to making a "solo" album - one where the focus is on her own singing and writing and interpretation. Now in 2010, E1 Music is releasingAvalon, which spotlights Lauren Kinhan as both a singer and composer.

Kinhan grew up in Portland, Oregon, but spent most of her adult career based in New York. "I moved to the city in 1989, mainly to pursue my music on a larger scale." She says, "A few years later, I was introduced to Peter Eldridge. We met at my East Village apartment and spent a glorious afternoon writing and talking about music. At the end of the day, he said 'I don't know if you're interested, but we're holding auditions for the 2nd soprano in the New York Voices.' The rest is history. I auditioned and 18 years later, we're still together."

She notes that for the first decade or so, "The Voices took practically all of our time and energy." But she gladly adds that, "lately there's more time for all of us to do other projects." Ms. Kinhan hesitates to describe Avalon as a "solo" album since so many collaborators were involved, yet that might be the most accurate way to characterize the eleven original songs that comprise the album, which run the gamut of styles and genres from jazz to standards to country, folk, Latin, Brazilian, and contemporary pop, and cover a wide range of subjects from romantic love to parenthood to spirituality.

She adds, in conclusion, that the album has been such a highly personal project to her for so long - the process of composing and recording the 12 tracks took years from beginning to end - "I am so curious about what the reactions will be. You know, it never gets old, that excitement of sharing your music with people. It's an opportunity that I really appreciate."

Romanian Pianist Marian Petrescu to Perform at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola on June 7 with Swedish Guitarist Andreas Öberg

MARIAN PETRESCU QUARTET WITH ANDREAS ÖBERG
SET TO PERFORM AT
DIZZY'S CLUB COCA-COLA ON MONDAY, JUNE 7

Resonance Records announces a performance date for Romanian pianist Marian Petrescu and his quartet featuring fellow label mate, Swedish guitarist Andreas Öberg, at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola on Monday, June 7. The dynamic duo performs in support of their respective new Resonance Records releases, Thrivin': Live at the Jazz Standard and Six String Evolution (both available on May 11).

The show is part of the "Monday Nights with WBGO" series presented by Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola. WBGO's Music Director, Gary Walker, will host the evening.

Thrivin': Live at the Jazz Standard, which was recorded in June of 2009, features a buoyant blend of standards culled from the Jazz and Great American songbooks and showcases Petrescu performing in the tradition and spirit of legendary pianist Oscar Peterson.

"When I was eight years-old, I heard Oscar Peterson on TV," Petrescu says. "I was so impressed, and at once I knew: This is what I want. This is what I will try to do. And I had to try very hard, because Oscar had that unbelievable musical level. It was not only his incredible technique, but the way he thought and handled this beautiful instrument."

It's obvious from Petrescu's impassioned playing on his 2009 Grammy-winning Resonance Records debut, Resonance Big Band Pays Tribute to Oscar Peterson and his latest release, that the late jazz piano giant made an indelible impression on him. Peterson's spirited swing is very much an integral part of Petrescu's playing.

Öberg (pictured at left) lends his breat
htaking technical facilities and consistently inventive melodic/harmonic sensibilities on Thrivin': Live at the Jazz Standard. The musical partnership between Öberg and Petrescu embrace and run parallel to the classic Joe Pass-Oscar Peterson collaborations. Öberg's characteristics are also apparent on his new release Six String Evolution, which features John Pattitucci, Dave Kikoski, Lewis Nash.

Throughout his career, Petrescu has played with artists such as Arturo Sandoval, Toots Thielemans, Al Jarreau, Didier Lockwood, Jon Larsen, Tony Williams, and Ray Charles.

Aside from Öberg's projects as a leader, he has performed with diverse artists as: Les Paul, Toots Thielemans, Jimmy Rosenberg, Bucky Pizzarelli, Joey DeFrancesco, Terell Stafford, John Pizzarelli, DJ QBERT, Harvey Mason, Andre Ceccarelli, Billy Kilson and Hank Jones, among others.

Available Today -- Israeli Guitarist Yotam Fronts All-Star Lineup on JLP Debut, "Resonance" --Features Christian McBride, Aaron Goldberg, Greg Hutchin

Available Today -- Israeli Guitarist Yotam
Fronts All-Star Lineup on JLP Debut, Resonance

Features Christian McBride
Aaron Goldberg, Greg Hutchinson
and Special Guest Roy Hargrove

On Resonance, his debut for Jazz Legacy Productions, accomplished Israeli guitarist-composer Yotam has one foot firmly planted in his bebop roots while also showcasing his love of Brazilian music, American blues, Jamaican reggae and Israeli folk songs. Tying this highly eclectic program together is Yotam's exceptional, rhythmically assured six-string work, which is marked by his inviting warm tones, clear articulation and penchant for free flowing improvisation. The New York-based guitarist is joined on this potent offering by the stellar rhythm section of Christian McBride on bass, Aaron Goldberg on piano and Greg Hutchinson on drums. Special guest trumpeter Roy Hargrove also appears on faithful recreations of Clifford Brown's "Daahoud" and Joe Henderson's "Mamacita."

"
Aaron, Christian, Greg and Roy, in my opinion, are a few of the giants of their generation," says Yotam. "I was very honored to have them on the record. We have forged a special chemistry together. And I think you can hear that on this album."

His strongest, most expressive and fully realized outing to date, Yotam's third recording as a leader stands as a notch above his previous two outings, 2004's The Arrival (recorded when he was still living in Jerusalem) and 2009's Next Page, a solid organ quartet date featuring Sam Yahel, Willie Jones III and Chris Cheek.

From pure bop numbers like Dizzy Gillespie-John Lewis vehicle "Two Bass Hit" and the Clifford Brown staple "Daahoud" to Brazilian flavored originals like "McDavid" and "Bye Y'all" to the angular, Monkish "Blewz" and the lyrical gem "Fresh Love Song," Yotam and company cover a wide range of musical styles on Resonance. Hutchinson provides the authentic reggae one-drop feel on the Monty Alexanderoriginal "Renewal" while McBride contributes some stirring counterpoint on Yotam's darkly beautiful, chamber-like number "Merav," which he named for his girlfriend and dedicates to two significant compositional influences in Benny Golson and Clare Fischer.

Yotam
and his all-star crew come out of the gate swinging hard with a supercharged rendition of Dizzy's bop anthem "Two Bass Hit." Right away, the guitarist showcases his superb facility, flowing over the changes while slyly dropping in quotes from Dizzy's "Manteca" and "Ooo-Bop-Sha-Bam" in the middle of his impressive solo. The whole band provides crisp execution and great drive throughout and everybody gets a solo taste here, including an outstanding bowed bass solo from McBride and a furious traversing of the kit by Hutchinson.

While Yotam does have an affinity for swinging full-bore in the bop and post-bop idioms, he is quick to point out that there are other aspects to his musical makeup that he wanted to address on Resonance. "I love playing bebop but I wouldn't say that is where I come from," he says. "When I was in high school I used to study a lot of bebop tunes. For three or four years I would only listen to bebop, but I'm not this way anymore. Nevertheless, it let its mark on me. And in the same way that I studied to become a bebop player, I became a Brazilian music fanatic for the last three or four years. I'm playing gigs with Brazilian cats now. I guess that's the best way to learn."

"McDavid" is a vibrant bossa nova number that has Yotam supplying some authentic Brazilian styled comping and also features another killer solo from McBride. "This is probably one of my only happy tunes," says Yotam. "Most of the tunes I write tend to be kind of sad. So I fooled everybody on this one."

The mysterious sounding minor key ballad "Merav" is a delicately beautiful number that has Hutchinson playing coloristically on the kit and also features Yotam nonchalantly double-timing the tempo on his outstanding solo. A brisk run through the bop staple "Daahoud" showcases Hargrove's brilliant trumpet playing while Yotam supplies some Wes Montgomery styled octave work on "Renewal," written by another of Yotam's mentors. "For the last year or so I'm very fortunate to have been working in Monty Alexander's band," he explains. "He's a great influence. I kind of fell in love with this piece of his and decided that I wanted to play it on this album."

"The Most Beautiful Girl" is a romantic ballad underscored by Hutchinson's gentle brushwork.Yotam and Goldberg turn in particularly lyrical solos here. The guitarist explains that the tune is one he remembers from his childhood. "That's an Israeli childrens song that I grew up on and that I really like to play on gigs. So it's a song from my past that I've embraced more recently. I think I was really amazing to bring that piece from my childhood in Israel to the session and let those guys play it and see what happened. And I like the results."

From that sensitive number, Yotam and crew launch into the aggressively angular "Bye Y'all," whose title has a double meaning. As Yotam explains, "This song has a north Brazilian rhythm from Bahia called baiao, so it's a kind of play on words that way. Thelonious Monk, whose playing was a kind of influence on this tune, also has a piece entitled 'Bye Ya.' So it's also a play on words there." The urgent "Blewz" opens with a tricky, Monk-ish head featuring some tight unisons between Yotam and pianist Goldberg. The piece resolves to a 12-bar form that has Yotam blowing with the audacious facility of a Pat Martino, another huge influence during his development as a player.

The minor key lament "Fresh Love Song," Yotam's interpretation of an Israeli pop tune from the '70s by Shlomo Gronich, has him doubling throughout on an exotic-sounding stringed instrument. As he explains, "It's a fretless, 11-string instrument and it sounds like the Arabic oud, so I call it the 'goud.'" Yotam adds, "It's a tune I love and I think I kind of took it to another place. I just hope the guy who wrote it is going to be happy with the way it came out here."

Yotam
's take on the Joe Henderson classic "Mamacita" (from the 1967 Milestone album, The Kicker) gives everyone in the band, including special guest Hargrove, a chance to stretch out on solos. And the album closes on an introspective note with the chamber-like meditation "Kineret," which has Yotam providing some Djangoesque filigrees along the way. "It's the Hebrew name for the Sea of Galilee," he explains. "It's a very peaceful sounding number that kind of reminds me of the Sea of Galilee. And it's really dedicated to the Brazilian composer Chico Buarque.

Born and raised in Tel-Aviv, Israel, Yotam started playing guitar at the age of 10, focusing mostly on rock and blues. He was soon after accepted into the prestigious Alon High School for the Arts, where he studied jazz with such great teachers as Walter Blanding and Amit Golan. During his high school years, Yotam won many local competitions and was heralded as a very promising young guitarist. At age 18, he joined the IDF (Israel's Army) and served as a musical director, arranger and lead guitarist for three years. During his military service he gained recognition and began playing with many of Israel's top jazz musicians.

At 21, Yotam won the prestigious "Israeli Jazz Player of the Year" competition with his trio and was asked to perform at Italy's renowned Umbria Jazz Festival. The same year, Yotamreleased The Arrival on the Fresh Sound New Talent label. The success of his highly acclaimed debut album enabled him to tour extensively throughout Europe and the Middle East.

In August of 2005, Yotam received a scholarship to further his jazz studies at the New School in New York City. Less than a month later, he was selected as one of 10 top guitar players to participate in the semi finals of the distinguished 2005 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Guitar Competition. In 2009, in addition to releasing his second release, he toured with the Sam Yahel Trio, opening for Steely Dan in major concert halls.

Since then he has played in many of the city's great venues with great jazz artists like James Moody, Benny Golson, Curtis Fuller, Louis Hayes, Jimmy Heath, Frank Wess, Junior Mance, James Spaulding, Pat Martino, Antonio Hart,

and Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars to name a few.

At age 28, Yotam has already made some significant inroads on the New York jazz scene. He shows great promise for the future, and Resonance is a huge step in the right direction.

CLAUDIO RODITI QUARTET: A BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
AT KITANO NEW YORK ON MAY 28 AND 29

PERFORMANCE IN SUPPORT OF
RESONANCE RECORDS RELEASE SIMPATICO

Resonance Records announces performance dates for Brazilian trumpeter Claudio Roditi at Kitano New York on May 28 and 29. Roditi will perform music from his new CD, Simpatico(release date: February 9), with sets at 8pm and 10pm. Additionally, the performance will serve as a birthday celebration for Roditi, who will be joined by an all-star lineup featuring pianist Nick Rolfe, bassist John Lee and drummer Vincent Ector.

In the wake of his acclaimed and Grammy-nominated (in the "Best Latin Jazz Album" category) 2009 Resonance Records release, Brazilliance x 4, trumpet/flugelhorn player Roditihas created Simpatico, another tuneful showcase for his patented blend of Brazilian samba and bossa nova with straight-ahead jazz, spotlighting both Roditi's playing and his composing talents.

"To me," Roditi remarks, "the main difference of this album from everything else I have done is that for the very first time these are all my compositions, all twelve of them. There are some new pieces, some a little older, but these are mostly things I haven't recorded, and some of them I haven't played live."

Roditi was born on May 28, 1946, in Rio de Janeiro and began his musical studies at the age of five. As a teenager he discovered the music of trumpet giants like Louis Armstrong, Harry James, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis, thanks to an American uncle's record collection. At twenty he was a finalist in the International Jazz Competition in Vienna, then in 1970 moved to Boston to study at the Berklee School of Music. By 1976 Roditi had arrived on the New York jazz scene, and over the years worked alongside such jazz luminaries as Mario Bauzá, Paquito D'Rivera, Joe Henderson, Herbie Mann, Tito Puente, Charlie Rouse and McCoy Tyner.

In 1989 Roditi became a member of Dizzy Gillespie's United Nation Orchestra, and since then he has toured and recorded with The JazzMasters and The Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band, Gillespie tribute groups led by musical director Slide Hampton. A gifted musical storyteller with a vast improviser's imagination, Roditi's playing is characterized by its essential lyricism and warmth. "Claudio doesn't even try to be original and he is," Paquito D'Rivera has observed, expressing a widely held opinion within the jazz community "He is such a sincere player. He doesn't play to try to impress anybody, he plays just music. ... I learn a lot from his way of approaching music, the honest way to play the music. The way he plays is so noble."

on Friday, May 21

Performance in support of Harvest Time
Entertainment release Schematic

Harvest Time Entertainment announces a performance date for guitarist Tom Lagana atChris' Jazz Cafe on Friday, May 21. Lagana will perform music from his new CD, Schematic(release date: May 18). The all-star line up includes venerated saxophonist George Garzone, bassist Tom Baldwin and drummer Todd Harrison. It's an evening not to be missed!

For the past decade, guitarist Tom Lagana has been quietly carving out a niche on the D.C.-Baltimore-Annapolis jazz scene, with occasional forays into Richmond, Virginia and Philadelphia. On Schematic, the 40-year-old protégé of guitarist Charlie Byrd makes a strikingly original statement with a potent rhythm tandem and special guests George Garzone on tenor sax and trumpeter Dave Ballou. "This is the blueprint for what I want the band to sound like," says Lagana of his impressive sophomore outing.

Lagana began his professional career in 1992 after graduating from the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After a two-year stint with the Walt Disney Jazz Band, he returned to Annapolis, Maryland. JD & JACKSON ON RED CARPETThere, jazz legend Charlie Byrd took an interest in him, inviting Lagana to sit in on his regular gig at the Maryland Inn. Soon after, the Tom Lagana Group became the house band, playing there three nights a week for over a year. In 2002, Lagana released his first recording as a leader. Reflecting on his love of the Chesapeake Bay region,Patuxent peaked at No. 17 in the US jazz charts.

Also an award winning classical guitarist with numerous symphony performances to his credit, Lagana holds a master of music degree in performance from Towson University. He became an instructor at the University of Maryland Baltimore County in 2005 and joined the faculty at Towson University in 2007. However, the versatile guitarist continues to maintain an unusually busy performance schedule.

Judging from the quality of his second CD, Tom Lagana will be on the radar for some time.Schematic is the Tom Lagana album to make guitar aficionados and the jazz world in general sit up and take notice of talent deserving of wider recognition. Enjoy much of its content live at Chris' Jazz Café.
